Over thirty people were present at the VFW to meet with Congressman Teague and not all were veterans. About half were and several had complaints about having to travel to Albuquerque for an x-ray or other minor procedures. One active duty AF and one ROTC member were present. The AF sargeant voiced concerns about cutting the military budget.
Cliff Milburn as Congressman Teague if it didn't make more sense with 20 million citizens out of work to enforce our immigration laws. Teaque responded that he is in favor of comprehensive legislation (amnesty).
Click on the title for Harry Teague's voting record. He voted against the second part of TARP (first half approved before he took office) on the theory that no one bailed him out as a businessman. He voted for the "stimlus" bill and he voted for the budget because we need infrastructure. Honestly, there was no consistency to his thought process and voting record that I can see except perhaps it is obvious that he is not for smaller government/budgets/debt.
The congressman was asked about Cap and Trade (I prefer to call it Cap and Redistribute). It was hard to follow but he started talking about termites and CO2. The Congressman did not appear to be concerned with cows. He mentioned them and humans in the same sentence (dismissively) and went for the termite angle. He has a picture with 4-H youth on his homepage if that reassures you.
In closing Congressman Teague told the audience something like - when Harry Teague calls nobody cares but when Congressman Teague calls, it gets their attention. I think he meant this in a positive way, that he could help his constituents but I have seen this attitude quickly turn to "I know better than you" and arrogance.
My predictions about Congressman Teague are that at this point you may get his attention on personal issues but that he is following the Democrat herd. He is not a fiscal conservative, pro-amnesty and appears to believe that government is a solution. Other than the 2nd Amendment, he made no references to the Constitution. It is a good thing that he seems to be supportive of our military and veterans but I have to wonder just how much he can accomplish.
Don't forget to come and hear former Congressman Stevan Pearce at RPOOC Wednesday at noon at the 19th Hole.
