I intend to highlight specific provisions of the bill in future columns, but would like to start with a look at the costs.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, here is an assessment of the current situation:

• U.S. health care expenditures in 2007 totaled $2.2 trillion, which amounts to roughly 2.5 times more per person than any other industrialized country;
• Government spending at the state and federal level accounted for roughly half of all health care expenditures ($1 trillion);
• The current government health care entitlements – Medicare and Medicaid – are already broke. Medicare alone has an unfunded liability of $38 trillion, while Medicaid’s increasing strains on State budgets contribute to fiscal crises from coast-to-coast;
• Costs incurred by families and business alike – in the form of higher premiums and out-of-pocket costs – continue to outpace wage growth, economic growth, and inflation.
• Exploding costs have forced families with insurance to do more with less, while leaving coverage increasingly out of reach for millions of Americans.

Rather than tackle the root causes of health inflation, H.R. 3200 would make matters worse. After the legislation had been passed out of the House Ways and Means Committee on July 17, 2009, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released its official cost estimate of H.R. 3200. With its objective analysis, the CBO dealt a serious blow to the legislation, demonstrating that the bill being rushed through Congress violated the very promises made by its proponents.

Among the CBO report’s chief findings as it relates to costs:

• Total costs would exceed $1 trillion;
• An economy already mired in a recession would be hit with tax hikes of $583 billion, while Medicare spending “cuts” would equal $219 billion;
• Despite the tax hikes and spending cuts, H.R. 3200 would still add $239 billion to the federal deficit;
• In a follow-up letter in response to my concerns on the long-term cost projection, the CBO Director warned of “substantial increases in federal budget deficits” for years to come.

The fundamental flaw with this government-centered approach is the misguided conclusion that we don’t currently spend enough on health care in America. I introduced an alternative reform proposal – “The Patients’ Choice Act of 2009” – which takes the money we already spend on health care, and spends it more efficiently, more effectively. Again, the federal government, with Obama at the helm, is creating another crisis to justify more taxes.

And as ingrained as things like eating habits and activity levels might be, CDC Director Thomas Frieden says there's reason for hope. He cites the success of higher taxes in reducing smoking by half among teenagers in New York.

"In the case of soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages, evidence from a couple of sources, including industry sources, suggests that higher prices will strongly discourage people from consuming soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages."

A U.S. Army Reserve major from Florida scheduled to report for deployment to Afghanistan within days has had his military orders revoked after arguing he should not be required to serve under a president who has not proven his eligibility for office.
His attorney, Orly Taitz, confirmed to WND the military has rescinded his impending deployment orders.
"We won! We won before we even arrived," she said with excitement. "It means that the military has nothing to show for Obama. It means that the military has directly responded by saying Obama is illegitimate – and they cannot fight it. Therefore, they are revoking the order!"
She continued, "They just said, 'Order revoked.' No explanation. No reasons – just revoked." ...

By hiding this hate crime bill as an amendment to Pentagon spending, moderate Democrats (and all but 2 Republicans) are faced with a difficult choice: either pass this bill protecting pedophilia and numerous other sexual deviancies or stop funding our troops. We must require S. 909 to be voted on as a stand alone bill.

A Private and a Public Meeting with Congressman Teague

My family and I were granted about a 2-3 minute audience with Congressman Teague yesterday. In response to my question of how he could have possibly voted for the "Cap & Trade" bill that would increase taxes on us all, and cripple this economy he stated, and I paraphrase..."When I got to Washington I thought we would actually have debates on things like global warming...but that train has left the station 4-5 years ago and I could have wasted my vote trying to turn it back. I voted for it because I got some concessions for New Mexico's small oil and gas producers." I asked him what ever happened to standing on principle. I reminded him that this disasterous bill only passed by 6-7 votes and if a few more representatives along with himself had stood on principle this bill could have been defeated. He had no response..he only stared at us without saying a word. I left with a request that he read the 10th Amendment to the Constitution before he votes on anything else.

Hi Folk's. Just a short note to let those of you who couldn't make it to the "Meet & Greet" what a joke it was. Due to traffic conditions on the Mtn, ( Rock Clearance at Bailey Cyn) I arrived at 5 mins to 1:00 pm, ( expecting to be turned away). Surprisingly, Teague's aid allowed me to stand at the end of the line( 4-5 remaining people). Everyone in front of me was "T-ed Off" and grumbling about "Cap & Trade" and Health Care . Each person was allowed 1 min. to talk to Mr. Teague, ( wow how nice ).
When it came to me, I simply told him I felt strongly that he screwed up by voting for the Cap & Trade Bill' without reading it and reminded him of his conversation with my wife when he visited Cloudcroft a couple of months ago. When she asked him about Cap & Trade" he replied "I don't even want to got there it gives me heart burn". ( So he voted for it anyhow?) I also advised him that my wife & I would be really working hard to defeat him when his term was up. He just stood there with a blank expression on his face and never responded.
As I was sitting in my car outside the Co. Office Bldg, He and his "Flunky" exited the Bldg and I noticed they were Talking & laughing Broadly with each other. Apparently he wasn't all that bothered by the citizen responses to his "Meet & Greet"!! I venture to guess Steve Pearce would not have acted in that manner.
My take on Teague is he is a one issue guy, ( Veterans Affairs) which is an easy one to make him look good for his constituents. Do not get me wrong, I support our Vets whole heartedly, and realize they need all the help they can get when dealing with the V.A.. I just have the impression Teague is a "One Trick Pony".

Illegal Immigration Effects Energy Consumption - Good News for Cap and Trade Advocates

Well, the offsets hit the fan in Alamogordo Thursday, 7/2/09. For documentation purposes, this ADN article did not report that there was a considerable dust up at the meeting. Congressman Teague gave a short welcome telling attendees of his new office in the Otero County Administration Building. He then left the commission chambers and a staffer told the assembled that Teague would take citizen questions privately in his office.

This ducking did not set well with some citizens who pointed out that the meeting was publically announced and they wanted their concerns heard by everyone there. After several "back and forths" by staffers to his new office, Teague relented, came back to the chambers and took some questions before taking the "private concerns".

Apparently, a similar fiasco occurred in Roswell the day before. If it didn't work in Roswell, why did Harry think it would work here?

Carbon bill unlikely to deliver promised jobs

"President Barack Obama is chiding critics of his carbon cap-and-trade proposal to combat global warming for being afraid of a future shaped by new energy technologies and thriving with so-called green jobs.

What those skeptics are really afraid of is a future locked to laws that institutionalize high unemployment, low growth and a lesser standard of living for Americans.

The administration and Democratic leaders in the House are banking passage of cap-and-trade legislation on the promise that the government's $100 billion investment in green technologies will spin off 5 million new jobs and hyper-boost the economy.

It's a tough sell, even to the administration's congressional supporters.

The House just narrowly passed the measure, with many nervous Democrats deserting their leaders to join Republicans in opposition. That spells trouble for the bill in the Senate, where bipartisan concerns about the impact on the economy are being raised.

Before the country commits to such a radical change, the promises made by supporters must be more carefully examined.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says her advocacy for cap-and-trade is all about "jobs, jobs, jobs, jobs." But there's no evidence that employment has grown anywhere in the world because of energy mandates such as cap-and-trade.

A study released in March by four professors hosted by the University of Illinois casts a great deal of doubt about green job creation.

The academics found claims of green jobs to be unsubstantiated or overstated, and that energy mandates will likely kill more jobs in other industries than they create.

The report also warns that strict government demands for renewable energy sources — the cap-and-trade bill requires 20 percent of energy production be from renewables — and bans on more plentiful and reliable sources such as coal will choke off growth and risk leaving the country in the dark.

There's also considerable disagreement about the cost of the cap-and-trade bill.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates it to be a mere $175 a household. But the conservative Heritage Foundation pegs it at $3,000 per household, which seems more realistic considering the impact on energy and fuel prices.

This is not a job creation bill and it won't revive the economy.

It's a bill, according to the professors, that would "lead to restructuring and possibly impoverishing our society." Senators should acknowledge that possibility before casting their vote.
