In a unanimous decision, Otero County Commissioners passed an ordinance (07-05) prohibiting United Nations World Heritage Sites in Otero County. The Commissioners took public comment which resulted in amending the proposed ordinance in Section 1. Provisions (2.) No World Heritage Site or buffer zone will be located on or adjacent to any military land or military research base or other facility in or adjacent to Otero County.
Other ordinance prohibiting the release of wolves, jaguars and grizzly bears in or adjacent to Otero County also passed unanimously.
You may access the complete ordinances at the Otero County website as soon as they are posted. http://co.otero.nm.us/index.html

Re-introduction, No Thanks There are few places left in this world, for the wolf. We have taken over his role in nature, and by putting an easy meal out in what was once his domain, set the wolf up to be the the bad guy. Wolves way of life is violent to many, as shown by the Range Article, but to me ours is little better. The obvious example, Iraq. The wolf never lived here in large number. Some lived as lone wolves, or in small family units. They could not fend off the government hunters, and trappers who brought the native N.M. wolf to extinction. Peoples desire for beef, and sheep, out weighed the wolf having his place in natures balance which is gone. Now there are few places left for wild wolves. They are rarely seen, even by those of us who study them. They do not go out of their way to be confrontational with humans. They avoid us when possible, unless water and food are at stake. If cornered, or confined, wolves will have hierarchical issues. Who's the Alpha? Wolves have not tried to kill us all off. There are other places where wolves do live near humans without such acrimony. It's by taking easy domestic food out of the equation, That isn't going to happen here. The cattle industry is important to our state's economy. We can't have it both ways.
