DEMING, N.M. (AP) - Border Patrol agents have discovered a booby trap of thin wires stretched along a patrol road in a remote area of southern New Mexico.
They say it could have injured or killed border patrol officers.
Saturday's discovery is the second wire trap found at the U.S.-Mexico border this year.
The trap was two sections of thin wire strung tight across the road, tied to a cattle fence on one side and a mesquite tree on the other.
One wire was about 4 feet from the ground; the second was about a foot from the ground.
Border Patrol spokesman Doug Mosier says it was spotted Saturday night by a local rancher. In his words:
"Anytime you have a booby trap and the cover of darkness, it makes for a dangerous formula."
