Re: Hayseeds!
Several years ago the AF was planning on low level flights over Otero County and had a meeting here in Mayhill to inform everyone.
This one "Hot Shot" AF colonel was strutting around like he was important and was telling us "Hay Seeds" everything that he thought that we should know.
After the meeting I walked up to him while he was talking to a local lady and heard him say, "I didn't know I was talking to an engineer!"
What he didn't know was that not only was she an engineer, but the first lady to obtain a PhD in engineering from Ohio State.
I told the "Hot Shot" that I was an engineer too and has seen colonels make coffee in the AF organization that I retired from.
I was an AF civilian. There weren't very many AF officers in that organization who had big heads. Just get the job done.
There are a number of ranchers and farmers in this area, and suspect all over, that have college degrees.
The ones that may not have formal educations, aren't dumb or the wouldn't have been able to exist in this very competitive industry.
One of the native local ranchers who is over 80 now was asked one time to accompany a friend to a court hearing that the friend was involved in.
On the way the rancher asked the friend if he had an attorney.
The friend answered, "You are."
Surprise, surprise.
The rancher who only has a formal high school education won.

Answer to pop quiz: Sheriff John Blansett and Commissioners Clarissa McGinn, Doug Moore and Mike Nivison. Why? Sheriff John Blansett is The Ultimate Law Enforcement Authority but you knew that, right. After you have read the above news story it will become apparent just how dependent we are on our Otero County Commissioners to get it right.
