"Future bids for world heritage status in the UK could be halted after a review released yesterday suggested that submissions cost too much for too little benefit.
The report, commissioned by Historic Scotland and the UK Department for Culture, Media and Sport, found that world heritage site status did not in itself provide any extra statutory protection for sites.
It added that the cost of applying to be a world heritage site had risen to £400,000, plus a further £150,000 a year to maintain that position."
