Alamogordo (ORF) A Mexican Gray Wolf accused of killing cow near Cloudcroft, goes on trial today. In opening statements, the prosecution charges ‘Brucie’ the wolf stalked and attacked a cow belonging to a local rancher. The cow died as a result of the attack.
Evidence gathered at the scene by authorities confirmed the cow’s death was caused by a wolf attack. Investigators found Brucie the wolf asleep under a tree a short distance away. DNA gathered from the wolf’s teeth and scat confirmed he had eaten part of the cow. Brucie the wolf pled not guilty, saying the cow’s death was an accident. Brucie said, in responding to intense grilling by the prosecution that he was running through the forest when the cow dashed out in front of him, causing a collision. “There was cow everywhere”, Brucie contends. “I couldn’t stop in time. I was running along and all of a sudden there was this cow right in front of me. I tried to swerve to avoid hitting it, but it was too late. I was knocked unconscious. When I came to I had cow all over me. I tried CPR. The cow died as a result of the collision. I count my lucky blessings I survived that collision”. The trial will continue throughout the week in Alamogordo.
